It's that time of year...time to do some heavy-duty cleaning, and maybe some tune-ups, around the house. It's also a good time to take a critical look at your website and identify some opportunities for enhancements. We've created a short list of ways you can improve your website. Some are quick-and-easy to implement, others are more involved. Pick the combination that makes sense for your site. Want help with implementation? 1. Add Video. Adding video to your website is a great way to increase visitor engagement, and may even help you rank better in the search engines. Videos can be short interviews with staff or customers, how-to's and demonstrations, news updates (think about converting a press release to video format), or answers to FAQs. Review the content you already have and consider whether you can re-purpose that content in a video.
2. Add FAQs. You (or your customer service department) probably have a list of questions that customers or prospective customers frequently ask. Get those posted to the website, along with detailed answers! While yes, you want the opportunity to talk with your customers, you also want to make it easy for people to find the answers to their questions--and many people would prefer to search the website. This new page can be as simple as a list of questions and answers, or you can get a little fancier and use a "click to expand" functionality where the user clicks the question and the page expands down to reveal the answer.
3. Go Responsive (if you haven't already). Last month Google rolled out an algorithm change that made it more important than ever for your website to be mobile-friendly. The best way of accomplishing this is with a responsive website design that automatically resizes your site to fit any screen it's being viewed on. This can be a somewhat involved process, but with more and more people browsing the web on their smartphones and tablets, it's worth the investment. For more on responsive websites, click here.
4. Check Your Links. It's frustrating for visitors when links on your website don't work, and it reflects negatively on your brand. Periodically take the time to click all the links in your website to ensure they all work, that documents haven't moved or been deleted, or that 3rd party sites you're linking to haven't made any changes that break your links. Or, use a tool like http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/. (We often prefer the manual method, because it provides a good opportunity to review your content as you go, and you may decide to archive out-of-date content or be inspired to create new content.)
5. Add New Functionality and Content. Consider adding social sharing options, converting a PDF form to an electronic form that people can fill out and submit right on the site, a blog, eCommerce, polling, an image gallery, or automatic renewals. Haven't updated your home page in a while? Consider freshening up the content. If you're using an image rotator, add some new images. Brainstorm other ways you can engage your visitors further, optimize their experience on the website, add value, and generally make their lives easier--then create a plan to make it happen!
